How Do Implant-retained Dentures Work?

Traditional dentures are held in place with suction and adhesive, while implant-retained dentures are more securely held in place with dental implants. One option is a removable implant denture. As the name implies, you can remove it and put it back in yourself.

A fixed implant denture is “bolted” into place and must be removed in our office. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of each and which one is right for you during a consultation.

The Implant-retained Dentures Procedure

The procedure for getting dental implants in Norridge is done in phases:

First, we’ll do any dental work that’s necessary beforehand such as extractions or bone grafts.

For the first part of the procedure itself, you’ll have a small, in-office surgery to have the implants placed in your jaw. Oftentimes, just 2-6 implants are needed per arch.

The implants are then given several months to integrate, or fuse, with the surrounding jawbone. During this time, we can make a temporary denture you can use until your permanent one is made.

The final phase is coming back to get your permanent denture. At this visit, we’ll make sure everything has healed properly and that your new denture feels great.
