WHAT IF I Do Nothing?
While it may seem easiest and most cost-effective to do nothing when faced with a dental injury, Dr. Kucharska and Dr. Troyan advise against this approach. Your teeth (unlike many other parts of the body) are unable to heal themselves following serious injury, which means that issues like serious tooth decay and fractures can only become worse over time. You may discover that your quality of life is negatively affected as well because of a weakened bite, frustrating oral pain, and a reduced sense of self-confidence.
All-Porcelain Dental Crowns
All-porcelain Crowns or metal free crowns are the preferred choice of our clinicians. They are more aesthetic, they mimic the natural enamel, and are very durable. In recent years, with the advancement of dental materials, we are able to offer these metal free crowns. These are as durable-some even more durable-as their predecessors. Some brands have been at the leading edge like IPS e.max by Ivoclar or Lava by 3M ESPE. More recently, we observed the development of full zirconium reinforced crowns designed for molar teeth. The durability is unprecedented. With compressive strength in excess of 1000MPa the full zirconium is by far stronger that the metal used as a base for old metal-containing crowns.
One of the biggest advantages of a metal-free crown is the elimination of the gray edge at the gum line.
Another positive aspect is the reduction of allergic reactions to the metals, namely nickel, that may be found in the dental alloys used in the fabrication of "'traditional crowns". It is estimated that up to 15% of patients may have metal allergy or sensitivity. If your gums around crowns appear red, swollen, or bleed easily please contact us for an evaluation of your crowns.
In today’s world, dark-colored amalgam is thankfully no longer the material of choice for correcting dental damage caused by cavities. Instead, our dentists use tooth-colored composite resin! This flexible and conservative upgrade comes in a variety of different lifelike enamel shades, allowing for the most aesthetically pleasing match possible. The lack of metals also results in less uncomfortable, temperature-related sensitivity when enjoying favorite foods.
